The Sustainability Specialist will be responsible for implementing and operationalizing our comprehensive sustainability strategy for the organization. This role requires creative problem-solving and strategic thinking to deliver action-oriented results. This role is responsible for implementing ESG policies, managing sustainability programs, tracking progress, and driving alignment across departments to integrate responsible business practices.
Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
- Align sustainability strategy with organization’s goals and objectives through data collection, management, and analysis.
- Develop and manage sustainability metrics and reporting systems to track progress and impact.
- Identify and evaluate new sustainability initiatives and projects.
- Work closely with internal teams to integrate sustainability into the organization's operations, risk-management, decision-making, and culture.
- Develop and implement employee awareness programs on sustainability and best practices.
- Support the development of new products, services, and facilities to meet environmental and sustainability standards while still meeting customer needs.
- Review facility operations, identify opportunities for improvement, and make recommendations for increasing energy efficiency and reducing waste.
- Support the development and implementation of policies and procedures to reduce carbon footprint, promote responsible sourcing, and ensure supply chain sustainability.
- Serve as the primary point for sustainability-related matters.
- Stay informed of industry best practices and emerging trends in sustainability.
In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:
- Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
- Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Requirements
Experience:
- 5-7 years of professional working experience in sustainability (e.g., sustainability program oversight, environmental management, etc.)
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in sustainability, sustainable business, environmental science, or related field.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in project management and execution.
- Comprehensive understanding of sustainability principles and best practices.
- Proven track record of implementing sustainability strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional and globally distributed teams.
- Knowledge of sustainable products and services with consideration for waste, water, energy, air quality, and chemicals.
- Strong knowledge of sustainability reporting frameworks, climate risk assessment, and environmental regulations.
- Naturally curious and passionate about the environment.
The salary range for this position is $75,455 - $94,300 d.o.e.
